Harold Ambellan
(1912–2006)
Along with Robert Cornbach, Buffalo native Harold Ambellan was the artist responsible for the low relief sculptures that adorn the entrance to every town house as well as the walls of the apartment buildings at Willert Park, recognized by Hitchcock, the The Museum of Modern Art, The New York Times art and architecture critic, as well as many others as one of the finest modern buildings in Buffalo and the Northeast. The sculptures were part of the Federal Art Project of the New Deal program, and were de- signed with prospective residents of Willert Park to depict scenes from everyday African American life. Despite being part of the U.S. Naval force that was responsible for liberating Normandy, Mr. Ambellan would exile himself to France due to the work of the House Un-American Activities Committee in the 1950s.
